We have come a long way to accept that girls have the potential to be whatever we’ve envisioned them not to be. All around the world, there is some amount of women representation agenda going on. It’s not about saying women need empowerment, it’s about seeing them manifest the things we want them to be. Some hindrances aside poverty is menstruation. We do not often refer to that but many girls have been entrenched in family taboos concerning menstruation and others have been made to feel ‘dirty in these periods. Even in urban centres where we believe education has gone higher, there are still girls who take medicine that prevents them from menstruating in order not to be stigmatized for their inability to prevent occurrences like getting their dresses soured whiles menstruating.
The multipurpose nature of women includes times when she is in her period. It doesn’t make sense then if due to one cycle in her life, everything must be put on hold. What clearly needs to be done is to let every girl access menstrual supplies. These supplies do not only boost their confidence but also reassures them that the system of hate and stigmatization towards menstruation is not true.
Let’s tackle our family system and rules. Everybody comes from one family or the other, whiles family systems are made to shape an individual’s life towards perfection it’s these same systems that have to demean our girls and have taught girls to not go beyond certain limits. It’s this same system that has taught girls to stay indoors when they menstruate and have given so many labels to such periods. Since all of us belong to a family, let’s then education begins within. Let’s begin addressing the ill system in our abodes and there would not be a need for huge seminars to educate people on such issues.
This year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day is focusing on investment into menstrual health and its related issues. Starlight Foundation has been a persistent advocate of menstrual health in its LET HER KNOW initiative which is focusing on girls with special needs in the Dzorwulu Special School this year together with the Grace of Heart organization. We believe that there is a SHE in her that needs to arise and therefore obstacles that hinder her from self-actualization need to be eliminated.
There is a girl menstruating in a household every day, joining this course is helping reach many girls who have been made to halt their normal lives due to menstruation. Your donations are crucial so that they can access menstrual items. What’s more important to us is that we address these issues in our immediate environment.
LET HER KNOW, THE SHE IN HER WILL ARISE.
