The things relating to menstruation happening in our homes, schools, and organizations is not for anyone to address but us. These things cannot be normalized; how can a girl at this day and age be menstruating with a rag? We’re calling our ways advanced on paper and not in deeds. If we claim to be evolving and developing our nation, then girls on their periods should not be left behind. Women form the majority of the population and a vast number of them in their prime. What we need to capitalize on is their abilities being exhibited now. We can’t continue to waste away the crucial part of their lives to things we can easily fix. We’re letting our girl child know that barriers such as menstruation are not the real obstacle. The real obstacle is us who have coined many imaginary barriers to periods, these imaginations have come to leave amongst us and are currently in the way of the many girls menstruating every day.
This time we’re doing this in partnership Heart of Grace Foundation. The conversation we’ve opened up for a long time is to update our thinking and actions towards periods. Last year on our visit to these girls, some of them have never had an experience of seeing a pad, talk of wearing it. This is what Starlight Foundation is introducing to all the schools we’re visiting, these girls need an experience of the 21st era. Whiles doing this we’re telling everyone to take action, we’ve wasted enough debating on this. We should realize the time is this minute. Let’s grant access to these girls in their time of menstruation. We’re training our girl child not to make an excuse out of anything, letting them out of normal life due to periods is only contradicting ourselves. Let fix this cancer in their lives, the first change towards womanhood in a girl’s life is menstruation.
“Once we start to work with Feminine power, we begin to see that it is not our minds that are in control of this power – it ebbs and flows with the movements of the planets, the procession of the seasons, the moons and tides, our internal cycles of menstruality, anniversaries, the events around us. All these and more impact our experience and expressions of power. We learn to become aware of these various patterns and their impact on us and work more consciously with rather than against or despite them. We learn that they are all part of the same process. We open towards the energy, rather than shut down to it. We learn to trust the flow”. (Lucy H. Pearce, Burning Woman)
Let’s support this year’s project to Dzorwulu Special School with donations of sanitary pads. We’re introducing our girls to the right way to treat themselves during their periods and your support is what would make this happen. We’re counting on your help for the change to visualize. Together period poverty would be eradicated.
