As part of the National Volunteer Day in Ghana on September 21, 2021 – The Starlight Foundation embarked on an outreach dubbed “Crush Covid” under their “Save A Life” initiative.
When we think of volunteerism, we’re looking at everyone in Starlight Foundation. Such selfless and dedicated people are devoted to the core vision of the organization. As we celebrate National Volunteers Day, Ghana, we’re reminding ourselves that not all rewards come in monetary form. Some come in the joy of seeing others in a comfortable and safe zone. This is why as ambassadors of street-connected children, we did not relax and let the day pass without being impactful.
From the later part of 2019, COVID-19 has become a routine in the world’s affairs. Luckily for us, a vaccine has been made to make us immune to it. Ghana, with over 30 million people, has only 1.27 million people vaccinated as of September 14, 2021. This means that a large number of people are likely to contact the virus and those already vaccinated are likely to get what we call the vaccine breakthrough infection.
The living condition of street-connected children is appalling, they are mostly found dirty and sleep in unhealthy places. What’s more, is that they touch us as we walk by them in their quest to beg for money. They have no form of protection and practice ways opposite to the precautions of COVID-19 we preach.
The C.E.O of Borla Daakye, Mr. Yaw Danso, and his team have realized the need to safeguard street-connected children from spreading the virus to the rest of the public. In line with that, they donated 1,000 face shields to be shared amongst such people. In the spirit of volunteerism, these items were shared at Madina, Nima, Circle, and Tema Station in Accra on September 21, 2021.
We want to thank the Borla Daakye team for continually helping create a suitable environment for all. We use this opportunity to encourage all to avail themselves as tools of transformation in our societies. Our societies would be better if we all agree to help build them.
Ayeekoo to all volunteers and may the good Lord continue to be our strength.
