If women should lift themselves beyond what they limit themselves to, then there must be systems in place that accommodate their growth. Men and women climb the same academic and social ladder and are exposed to the same knowledge yet men are preferred in high places of economic and political status than women. The Glass Ceiling element in our societies forbids a woman to be in certain positions. She should prioritize marriage and childbirth and leave the big talks to the men. A woman who tries to break this norm has no purpose and has misplaced priorities.
While these talks of bridging the gap between men and women in society are verbally ongoing, our minds are still not ready to accept the reality of change. We still want our women to be portrayed as weak, independent, vulnerable beings who cannot do anything without the interference of a man. Then we talk about women pushing themselves up to challenge the structure of society whiles society is not ready to accept that change. Up till now, there are homes where women cannot voice their opinions and they cannot be seen pursuing certain goals.
It’s all start in our homes, where the girl child is taught to be respectful and multi-task whiles our male children are taught that certain actions are a “woman’s job”. Most parents have advised their girl child not to challenge or speak out their plights else they will be beaten by the opposite sex. For us, a woman is one we can tremble upon and not the one who can stand up for herself.
That’s why this year’s International Women’s Day seeks to break the biases in our society. Women are pursuing higher learning, women are shaping their voices to be heard yet the platforms are few to accommodate them. Women are not tools of abuse that can be pounced upon anytime because we feel they are weak. Marriage and childbirth do not stop a woman’s dream, what we seek for women is that their voice should be included and their voice should matter in both economic and political platforms.
The fight for equality is still on, let’s not end it by merely speaking a few words. The reality is that a change of mindset and embracing current happenings in the world would see a drastic change in the participation of women everywhere
