Effective advocacy begins with empowering street-connected families to be able to speak for themselves. One of the key objectives for Starlight Foundations and Adamfo Ghana in this year’s celebration is to engage the families on the street to educate them on how they can speak for themselves. Parents and their children on the street are the best narrators of their plights on the street. Most of our interactions with them bring to bear the need for a safer space to accommodate these children and give them a better lifestyle. Through our interactions, we are encouraging them to speak up for themselves and take up any chance to better themselves.
The lives of these children cannot be reduced to begging for money and indulging in all sorts of vices. These parents were made to understand that a repetition of generations on the street is a risk to not only themselves but the whole nation. There are opportunities for street children to be in school and learn valuable skills yet their parent wants to use these children as a mode of attracting sympathy to themselves.
The world is open to conversations on the challenges of street children and no one can do it better than them. At any given time, they need to speak up and demand that the right of their children be fulfilled diligently. Most importantly, they must avail themselves to experience the changes we are advocating for. These children deserve better and thus the people in control of their affairs must recognize this truth and work at it at any given chance.
