Over the years, the Starlight Foundation has delivered early intervention to at-risk young children through its award-winning ‘Teach Them Young’ initiative, which has helped prevent their transition into street life. During our interactions, participation and feedback have been crucial in understanding the patterns that lead children to live on the streets. One of our key approaches is equipping these children with the knowledge to make positive choices that steer them away from street life.
This year’s International Day of the Street Child focuses on the importance of supporting children’s participation in decisions affecting their livelihood, raising the question of whether children are sufficiently empowered to advocate for themselves. We are addressing abuse and exploitation through proper channels by highlighting the plight of vulnerable children in their communities and encouraging them to join the fight against street life by speaking up about issues at early stages.
We extend our gratitude to the authorities at Mamfe Methodist Junior High School and the Ghana Ambulance Service for providing an in-depth session with students on emergency health interventions. When they understand their healthcare rights and options, vulnerable children are better equipped to protect their health.
Through the generous support of Wings of Support, we have provided essential educational supplies, including exercise books, pens, mathematical sets, and sanitisers to these children. This demonstrates that when given proper tools and opportunities to participate, children can break the cycle of poverty and create meaningful change in their communities.
