Participation is a fundamental right of every child in society. While children are dependent individuals who need guidance and assistance to make informed decisions, they possess the capacity to make sound judgments in critical moments.
As part of this year’s International Day of the Street Child, Starlight Foundation is taking a stand through our ‘Teach Them Young’ initiative to highlight the importance of involving children in decisions that affect them. Historically, decisions about privileges and access to basic amenities have been made without the involvement of these children. This has rapidly increased the number of street-connected children, as these decisions often fail to address the core issues affecting their livelihoods.
It was particularly rewarding when personnel from the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) delivered an in-depth workshop on children’s rights through our ‘Teach Them Young’ initiative during our visit to Tinkong Presbyterian Junior High School.
This initiative aligns with the Starlight Foundation’s long-term goal of creating an ecosystem for vulnerable children where they gain comprehensive knowledge of their rights and have competent individuals to represent their interests.
In partnership with Wings of Support, we are empowering young people to remain in education by providing essential supplies such as exercise books, pens, mathematical sets, and sanitisers. We emphasise that vulnerable children can contribute to discussions about issues affecting them, and one way to support this is by amplifying their voices regarding their fundamental rights and privileges.
