Each year, on April 12th, the world is reminded of the millions of young people who have grown up without shelter, security, or access to basic rights. This year’s theme, ‘Participation,’ highlights the need to create environments where street-connected children feel seen, heard, and valued. True participation and inclusion go beyond access to basic amenities; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and empowering these children to participate in shaping their own lives and communities.
With this mindset, the Starlight Foundation continues to break barriers through its transformative project, “Teach Them Young,” under our early intervention approach. This year, our aim emphasises personal development through critical thinking and civic responsibility using creative and context-driven educational methods. In collaboration with stakeholders from the Ghana Fire Service, Ghana Ambulance Service, and Ghana Police Service, including the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), we are committed to equipping children with the knowledge about the choices that affect their lives while fostering a safe and healthy environment for growth.
This remarkable impact has been further amplified thanks to the partnership with Wings of Support. This collaboration has enabled children not only to access professional knowledge and ongoing mentorship, but they have also received learning materials such as exercise books, mathematical sets, and sanitisers as part of the educational process.
On this International Day for Street Children, let us remember that participation is not charity; it is justice for all. The responsibility lies with all of us to listen to, nurture, and include every child, no matter where they come from, in shaping the world they deserve.
