There is a reason why houses are not built in the middle of the roads. In the mindset of the architect, every structure has a unique location and one doesn’t take the place of the other. The significance of streets is to be a path that connects people to their destination. It’s a place people see themselves for a moment and walk on, that place is not a home, how it was designed doesn’t fit into the definition of a home.
When you use the street in your neighborhood, have you ever imagined it as a place you can call home? The answer is obviously NO! if we can’t stay there then why do we allow a portion of us to live there, some virtually all their lives. It has become part of us, we are comfortable seeing them like that. We speak little about their development, plans for them are mere promises to gain power.
We talk about slums and street children like it would be attended to immediately yet their numbers keep increasing. We have a body in government responsible for the welfare of children, we hear them talk and we see less of their deeds. We wait till a street child is raped or arrested before we talk, it seems we are waiting for bad news before we realize our responsibilities.
In this era of COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve realized how important humans lives matter, maybe we’ve been selective of who matters because issues pertaining to street children even in this period of emergency haven’t been addressed. They need good food to boost their immune system, they need shelter which is a home that is obviously not the street. Home is where they have access to benefits that every child deserves. Let not allow their situation to become normalcy. They deserve their rightful place in society and if up until now we think their place is on the street that is why we leave them there then it defeats the ideology of all lives matter.
YENHOHIA! They matter too, their lives and development are what defines us a people. When we refuse to look into their issues, we are the same people who suffer the consequence. When they steal, they steal from us, when they beg, they beg from us, when they become sick, it’s at our own cost.
