We can only address the visible things that stunt our growth and development. Most issues that require an emergency response are those that threaten our existence and make our growth stagnant. Streetism isn’t a new social canker, the damages of leaving it unattended haven’t benefitted us in any way. Many of us have been robbed by these children and the continuous vices in our communities have been sparked by them. Now they are more vigorous and aggressive, taking from society most inhumanly.
This is because we’ve refused them access to the things that make them children; shelter, food, clothing, and protection. At this stage their independent of us and no matter where they are, they should not be refused these benefits.
This year’s international day for street children addresses what most nations have refused to do. We are giving more to those who already have it and neglecting those who need it more. The inequality has reason to a height that it has become a normality, nobody wants to get themselves dirty helping these children.
Access for them is not doing them a favor, it’s our responsibility. That’s why a whole ministry has been assigned to their needs. The ministry doesn’t exist to attend colorful events but ride down to these children and make them beautiful.
In this year’s celebration, Starlight Foundation focuses on schools in its Teach Them Young initiative. These schoolchildren are being encouraged not to join the existing street children as we are on a journey of taking them off the streets. Backed by Adamfo Ghana, these children would also be thought of fire safety tips, reproductive health, career choices, and decision making.
Special thanksgiving goes to authorities of Great Bright Mind School for availing their students of these teachings. This is how we would contribute to making our children access the various things that contribute to their future and put them off the streets.
