Children are the most independent beings on earth. At this stage of their life, their only responsibility is to learn what they are taught while adults take up the responsibility of providing for them. In the case of street children, there is a twist, they are rather the providers mostly from poor families tasked to provide for the rest of the family.
When we take a look at children on the streets, most of their parents sit across the street and use these children as an object of sympathy. These children walk in between cars begging, exposed to the dangers of being hit by a moving car.
We’ve robbed them of their childhood and have bestowed on them a role they have no idea of. They are children which means that they are at the development stage of their life in need of direction and caution to shape their lives. If their parents are unable to do that, then it dwells on society to take up that task.
Whatever a child would become is not only the duty of their parent but other people around. Whatever they become affects society as a whole and that is why we need to let them be children and not any other whiles granting them access to things that develops them in a positive way.
This and other messages are what Starlight Foundation and Adamfo Ghana are taking to schools in its Teach Them Young initiative. As part of the celebration of international day for street children, we want to keep our children where they belong; in school developing their skills and talents, and off the streets.
As part of ensuring their safety in this period of a global pandemic, the schools received personal protective equipment such as hand sanitizers, nose masks, veronica buckets, dustbins, and washing soaps.
Our thanksgiving goes to the school authorities of Premier Young Future Academy for allowing their children to be impacted as part of the campaign against Streetism.
Street children deserve more and the more we deny that fact, the more we lose many great personalities to the streets. On the street they are not safe, they are rather a threat to the peace and stability of our society.
