Many are the afflictions of street children. To survive a day of physical and emotional abuse on the street is very challenging. These are the same children who were named to be great people in society. Indeed, all of us may not end up in higher positions in society but no one should end up on the street. The time parent gets to spend with their children is few. They’ve left their parental influence into the hands of teachers and guardians who in several ways are not committed to a child. For a child to get the audience of their teachers on issues other than academics can be difficult. So, they turn to their peers, clearly having a sense of belonging with an individual or a group is what everyone yearns for.
What our children talk about in these peer groups needs more attention than any other thing. Talk of peer pressure and truancy has become a norm in classrooms. Some parents are still in doubt about what their children have become outside the home. With the rise of these peer groups sharing negative ideas with our children, then the future will portray adults as full of regret and blames.
Let’s endeavour to teach them at this stage the possible consequences of such bad groups and attitudes. We are looking forward to a future where our children will be at a place where they want to be and not in a place they ended up due to our negligence.
Decision making, career choices, fire and road safety and most importantly streetism are what our Teach Them Young initiative has impacted in the lives of many pupils we’ve encountered. We are very firm on the need for our children to stay in school in the right mindset with the right peers. Adamfo Ghana and Starlight Foundation have made it possible for these children to come into the light of many misconceptions in their minds as well as have souvenirs such as exercise books, mathematical sets, pens and sanitisers for their protection against COVID-19.
We are grateful to the school authorities of Dawhenya Calvary Academy in the Dawhenya District for their great interaction with their pupils. We are very happy that these young minds had the opportunity to life lessons beyond their academic books. What we pick up from interacting with the pupils is the need for us to reach out to every Ghanaian child before they reach a point of destruction, and we will make sure that the street doesn’t become an attractive site for our future leaders.
