This year’s International Day for the Street Child focuses on creating a safe place for street children and granting them the needed amenities to be able to survive daily. Our Teach Them Young initiative makes us ambassadors of Streetism in our schools and communities because we cannot afford to lose more children to the street. This means that we must also create a safe place for our children back home.
Children are not safe when they are constantly bullied, threatened and ridiculed for reasons beyond their control. That is why most of them end up on the street because there they control their affairs and do not need anyone’s approval. Many schools have adopted the peer groups’ strategy as a way of letting the children explore things outside their books. What Starlight Foundation wants to impact in these groups are interactions that benefit their life in school and at home. When they meet their peers, we want them to share things they learn from our interactions so that every child can be safe.
The school authorities of God’s Justice Academy in Dzodze, Adagbledu in the Volta Region believe that the street is an unsafe place for children and thus welcomed our teachings into their classroom. What our children are thinking and talking about is very important to us. We want these thoughts to be specifically tailored to their safety wherever they find themselves and should anyone or anything threaten this, they must be in a better place to defend themselves.
Together, we will intentionally groom safety-conscious children for our society.
