The misinformation going on in our homes is detrimental to the safety of our children at home and in school. Our children are paying attention to the conversations and the things we say to them and thus parents must be equipped with the right information so that they can impact facts on their children.
As part of our community engagement as we celebrate the International day for street children, Starlight engaged with some students of the University of Ghana, Legon and its environs on the effects of Streetism and how they can add their voices in creating awareness of the dangers of Streetism with their communities. As much as we want to target children, these are parents and older siblings who care for these children daily. And as we hold certain people accountable for the safety of our children, they are safer when we take a conscious step to ensure they’re safe wherever they find themselves.
Aside from safety, adults must know how and when to address issues concerning street children. Our children are finding the streets more attractive than the classrooms. We are not taking notice of these changes because we are not been active in the daily lives of our children. That’s the message we gave to the students of the University of Ghana and other individuals. It’s not enough to put our children in school, school becomes a gift to our children when they can pass through without any interference.
As you’re home, make a conscious effort to concern yourself about what is happening in the lives of your children in and outside the home. This effort will save our future leaders from ending up in unfortunate situations.
