There are several Non-Profitable Organizations (NPOs) with an interest in street-connected children. Many initiatives have been structured to both keep and train these streets connected children. What these NPOs want from us is to show concern for the development of these children. A street child is not a nuisance, their current situation can be traced to a lot of factors. Whiles Governmental bodies and NPOs are collaborating to find permanent solutions to streetism, we as a community must make an effort to be involved in the process.
We want them out of our streets yet we behave as if the street is a place for them to be. It’s not all about giving them money and food. We are looking at a long-term solution where they can cater for themselves in the future. Our school-going children must be thought when to speak up when anyone or anything threatens their livelihood. Some of the children on the street are a result of constant physical and emotional abuse and are seeking a place they can feel at peace. We are very glad that the school authorities of Mac-Tetteh Int. School in Dzodze of the Volta Region of Ghana are concerned about the happenings on the street and the need to protect their pupils.
What is happening on the streets is not only for the government to solve. Let’s genuinely show concern and get them the needed help. Constantly ignoring them will only cause more harm than good.
