“My plea is that don’t wait for a girl to become a woman to empower them. Empower a girl’s life by giving sanitary pads to them. With pads, we give them wings.” — Arunachalam Muruganantham
At this time, there’s a girl somewhere having anxiety because she’s on her period but her lifestyle has stopped for the next seven days. Without menstrual products, she cannot step out and become who she wants to be. The sanitary pads have been given to our specially-abled girls to make them feel secure when they step out on their periods. It’s also to ensure there’s no barrier as to who can access menstrual products.
Our visit to the girls of Accra Rehabilitation Centre made us understand that having a safe period is essential to the mental health of these girls. The fear of being mocked and despised makes it more difficult for them to accept their periods. With both disposable and reusable pads in their hands, these girls can confidently move about their periods like any normal day. The exciting news is that wherever they find themselves, they have an option of which sanitary pad to use.
We’re grateful to the school authorities of Accra Rehabilitation Centre for a time with their girls. A menstrual day can be like any other day, our girls need to feel secure at all times.
