Lack of sanitary has not only kept many girls out of the classroom, but it has also landed most of them in cases of teenage pregnancy, child abuse and early marriage. The high cost of acquiring just a pad makes most girls fall prey to men. From our experience with our Let Her Know project, there has been increased class attendance by girls who have received both reusable and disposable sanitary pads. This is to say that they do not have to result to other ways to acquire a pad which will cause a negative steer in their education.
To be able to reach their full potential in society, menstrual hygiene can be considered to be one factor. Most girls dread their periods not only because of the pain but the embarrassment of having to go 3 or more days without anything to keep their blood flow away. The girl child is stacked in one place, unable to interact in fear of the disgrace of an apparent blood flow.
If the girl child’s education is as important as we claim then it’s equally important to have measures in place that do not keep them away from school. One of these things is what Starlight Foundation is doing in these schools and communities and now the turn of the pupil of Teshie Salem Presby JHS School. It’s possible to end period poverty and save our girls from reckless men who take advantage of them due to their circumstances.
Next year by this time, let’s meet again with many heroic messages on how menstrual hygiene has improved in our schools and communities and how our girls’ mindset has been directed to focus on what the future holds for them. Remember you participating in this or not will not stop a girl period. This makes it compulsory for us to guard our girls against the public shame of not having sanitary pads and unfortunate incidents such as early pregnancies.
