Menstruation is an undeniable aspect of women’s lives, and the Starlight Foundation, in collaboration with our partners, has been dedicated to raising awareness through our Let Her Know initiative. While the existence of menstruation is widely known, there remains a significant gap in education due to cultural traditions surrounding the topic. At Starlight, we are committed to joining the global movement to create a world where menstruation does not hold anyone back.
This year, our educational efforts have focused on inclusivity, particularly by engaging men and boys in menstrual education. By fostering empathy and understanding, we aim to eliminate the harmful stigma attached to menstruation. Abuse, ridicule, and social stigmas surrounding menstruation have long been embedded in societal norms. Regrettably, this issue affects school-going girls, who often face the challenge of missing school due to the lack of menstrual products. Through our recent campaign, girls not only receive essential education on safe practices during menstruation but also overcome these barriers.
Our approach has yielded positive changes, empowering girls to be confident and unashamed of their periods. Additionally, we ensure that they have access to necessary menstrual products. Unfortunately, for many girls in Ghana, these products are either inaccessible or prohibitively expensive. Consequently, they are left with outdated practices that compromise hygiene and expose them to various health risks. Starlight Foundation, in collaboration with our partners Adamfo Ghana and Wings of Support, is actively removing this barrier by providing both disposable and reusable sanitary pads. This ensures that these girls can confidently carry out their daily activities in a safe and hygienic manner.
On this occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we urge you to contribute to creating a more comfortable period experience for girls. By helping us distribute sanitary pads to those in need, you will make a significant impact in ensuring that no girl is left behind and protect them from potential predators who take advantage of their vulnerability.
Let us come together to empower girls, offer support, and promote menstrual hygiene. Together, we can build a brighter future where menstruation is truly normalized, and girls can thrive without limitations.
