Today on International Children’s Day, we reflect on how upholding child rights creates more just and equitable societies. Aligning with the 2023 theme, “For every child, every right,” this year spotlights the urgent need to end corporal punishment, a harmful practice violating children’s fundamental rights.
At Starlight Foundation, we strive to educate vulnerable children in Ghana about their rights, collaborating with other stakeholders to provide guidance on safely reporting abuse. Our outreach programmes empower street-connected children to advocate for themselves and understand they deserve care, protection and opportunities to learn and grow. We believe every child, regardless of circumstance, is entitled to basic human rights like healthcare, education, shelter and freedom from exploitation.
However, millions of children still face abuse, neglect, child labour, malnutrition, lack of schooling and more. They cannot defend their rights alone. This is why collective action is crucial – governments must strengthen child protection systems, and communities must provide care and speak up when rights are infringed. As individuals, we can advocate, volunteer, foster, donate and remind children they have inherent worth.
Let us work together to ensure all children are safe, valued and positioned to thrive. Their dreams today will shape our shared tomorrow. By promoting every child’s right, we can build a future where all belong, are heard and can pursue their limitless potential. Our children deserve no less.
