As Ghana celebrates its 67th Independence Day, it is a solemn reminder of the unfinished journey towards true freedom and equality for all its citizens, especially the most vulnerable – our street-connected children. The increasing number of children living on the streets is a stain on our nation’s conscience, a stark contrast to the promises of independence.
Despite decades of self-governance, both past and present administrations have failed to adequately address the plight of these innocent children. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, tasked with safeguarding their well-being, has fallen woefully short, allowing the crisis to escalate unchecked. We, as citizens, have also contributed to this travesty, often turning a blind eye or perpetuating harmful stereotypes towards these children who never chose their circumstances.
This Independence Day should be celebrated in shame, for we have betrayed our founding principles of unity, freedom, and justice for all. The true spirit of independence cannot be realised until we prioritise the protection and empowerment of our most marginalised populations, including street-connected children.
At Starlight Foundation, we have witnessed firsthand the resilience and potential of these children, despite the immense challenges they face. Through partnerships with like-minded organisations, we have provided educational opportunities, vocational training, and psychosocial support to rebuild their lives. However, our efforts alone are not enough to create sustainable, inclusive change.
It is time for a collective awakening, a call to action for the government, civil society, and every Ghanaian citizen. To build a sustainable, inclusive society for all children, we must confront the uncomfortable reality that our inaction and limiting beliefs have perpetuated this inequality. The challenge may be great, but it is certainly not insurmountable, and we all have a part to play.
There will be some uncomfortable moments, but getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is a major first step in making a real difference. Without exploring and challenging our limiting beliefs, we can be inadvertently complicit in fueling inequality.
Let this Independence Day be a turning point, a catalyst for real change. Let us honour the sacrifices of our forefathers by ensuring that no child is left behind, no child is denied the fundamental rights to safety, education, and a dignified life. Together, we can break the cycle of generational poverty and streetism, creating a Ghana where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Starlight Foundation stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders, from the government to grassroots organisations, to create a comprehensive, sustainable solution to this crisis. We must act now, for the future of our nation depends on how we protect and nurture our children today.
